About Us
At German Beauty, we believe that body care products should be low in price and high in quality.
In Germany, body care is both – and so the idea of our business was born.
It is our mission to bring you great products at great prices, because looking after your body shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg.
We are two Hamburg-born girls, Katharina and Sophie, who have lived in Cape Town for most of our adult lives.
We import German quality face care, body care, sun screens, health and wellness products, as well as sex toys to South Africa.
Whenever one of our friends traveled “home” to visit family, we asked for specific items to be brought back: face creams, multivitamins, and sun screen being perhaps the most popular. We never understood how it could be that in a country like South Africa, where sun screen is a necessity rather than a luxury, shops could charge triple of what we’d pay in Germany.
The same applies to most things you usually get at Dis-Chem or Clicks: they are either horribly overpriced (are you really going to pay R 240 for 50 ml of Olay face cream?), or of low quality (house beauty brands, we are looking at you).
Why are German beauty products better than others?
When it comes to quality, Germany has very high standards. Developers of German cosmetic products believe in a science-based approach. They are driven by technology and strict protocols, and every product’s promise has to be fact-checked and tested extensively. This scientific approach to skincare focuses on the power of ingredients and formulas, so that you can rely on the results.
In addition, German consumers are very picky. In addition to high quality, they also worry about the ethical standards and environmental impact of the produced body care. As a result, you will find that our creams and cosmetics were not tested on animals, contain no harmful micro-plastics or other harmful ingredients. In fact, many of them are completely vegan.
Germany also has independent consumer organisations involved in investigating and comparing goods and services in an unbiased way, such as “Stiftung Warentest”. Another popular one is “Öko-Test”, which has a special emphasis on health and environmental impact when testing German products.
With the above in mind, you can see that in Germany a pretty packaging won’t just cut it – if it isn’t a great product, it won’t be bought. And in the fiercely competitive German market, that is the end of any sub-par body care ranges.
Why are German beauty products cheaper than others?
Germany has a very high density of competing supermarket and pharmaceutical chains. Most of them offer their own beauty ranges, and in order to stay competitive they have to offer very low prices at exceptional quality. In addition, many of the product ranges offered by chain stores do not need to spend extensive amounts on marketing. The consumers can pick them up during their everyday shopping. They also do not invest large sums in fancy packaging, which your skin doesn’t care about either (and the environment even less, of course). The combination of all of these factors lead to lower prices.
Still not convinced?
- The Cien cream “Creme Soft”, offered by German grocery chain Lidl, was the only one cream to be rated “excellent” by German Stiftung Warentest. It tested over 15 different creams (date: 2017).
- The Biocura anti aging night cream, offered by German discounter chain Aldi, was rated the best cream when compared with even far more expensive anti aging face creams.

How can German Beauty keep their prices so low ?
First off, through low profit margins. This may seem counter-intuitive for any business, but the very premise on which this company is founded is just that – great quality at great prices. This is what you, our customer, deserve.
Secondly, we try to run this company as lean as possible – our main spends are on procuring the products in Germany, shipping and export, and import. And, of course, our website. No fancy advertisements, no fancy packaging, no nonsense which would drive up prices for you.
As our business grows, we intend to import an even wider variety of your favourite face care, body care, health and wellness, and beauty brands. The more we import and sell, the lower we hope to make our prices for you.
